Adult and youth footballers in Kent can look forward to brand new facilities after Staplehurst Parish Council and local clubs teamed up to secure a £390,000 grant from the Football Foundation recently. The cash bonanza will go towards a brand new £530,000 changing room facility at Jubilee Sports Field in Headcorn Road, Staplehurst, with the Parish Council plus Kent County Council, Maidstone Borough Council and Staplehurst Guide Centre all injecting funds into the project. Both Staplehurst Monarchs FC and Staplehurst & Monarchs United FC also pumped money into the scheme which will give the community a chance to enjoy modern 21st century facilities upon completion. Funded by The FA, the Premier League, Sport England and the Government, the Football Foundation is the nation’s largest sports charity with a £45m budget going straight into the heart of football. Paul Thorogood, Chief Executive of the Football Foundation said: “We warmly congratulate the Parish Council, Staplehurst football clubs and the Kent County FA for their hard work and dedication in securing this award. “Sport is playing a central role in helping people to stay fit, strengthen communities and promote responsibility amongst young people. “I am delighted that Football Foundation investment is opening up access to sport in Staplehurst which will encourage other organisations in the region to apply to us.” Nigel Best, Chairman of Staplehurst Monarchs FC and Mick Hooker Chairman of Staplehurst & Monarchs United FC, jointly commented: “The Football Foundation award is a fantastic moment in the history of the football clubs in Staplehurst as it will secure the long term future of football within our village. “We thank the Football Foundation as well as all our local funders and members for their support and financial backing to achieve our dream. "We look forward to the opening of the improved facilities mid way through next season, which will enable all teams to play again within the village” The Chairman of Staplehurst Parish Council, Councillor Margaret Arger added: “We’re delighted that, after many years of hard work, the efforts of a few have finally come to fruition. “There will soon be a facility for the benefit of the many keen footballers within Staplehurst which will also encourage the further development of teams and will become a centre of excellence.”
The long awaited construction of the new sports changing facilities began on Monday 13th October 2008 and is expected to take 20 weeks with completion during the first week of March 2009. Barwick Construction Ltd., was awarded the tender and has wasted no time in getting the site prepared.
The first jobs have included fencing off the site compound for security and protection of existing trees to comply with MBC landscaping conditions. Works to extend the existing car park and preparation of the site for pile driving were due to take place at the time of writing. However, a digger was stolen from the site overnight which has caused problems. Provided no further thefts cause delays, the roof should be on before the Christmas break.
The electrical, plumbing and decoration works to complete the four changing rooms, officials rooms (all with showers and toilets), together with a small kitchen and social area, will be worked upon early in the New Year. Meanwhile partnership working amongst the Parish Council with the Football Clubs to finalise the legal documentation is continuing. The Football Clubs will be responsible for the future running and maintenance of this new facility.
This project has been made possible thanks to the major grant awarded by the Football Foundation and supported by a number of other grants from Kent County Council, Maidstone Borough Council, Staplehurst Parish Council, all Football Clubs and the Guides.
